Why does everyone now start their sentences with the word so?

Is it off a tv programme or something? Seems to have happened overnight.

There are loads of words people use these days that they seem to think makes em sound cool and trendy, like incredibly, everything is fuckin incredibly this and that, They are not cool or trendy, they are WANKERS.

It's an Americanism, like so many others that have crept in to the English vernacular over the years. 'Buddy' seems to be another one.

I'm in my mid thirties and occasionally ill end my sentences with 'man'. But I'm a bit of a hippy end and spent a lot of time in the jungle scene when I was growing up so is to be expected man

It's been around for a while now, you get the interviewee who slips the first one in at the start of their replies, and leaves it at that.
Then there's those who attempt to start every other fucking sentence with it - I've go to the point of muting the TV for a minute, when that happens.
if they think that mimicking something, that was already annoying 18 months back, makes their replies sound a little more intelligent, then whatever fills their boots I guess.
Somebody told me it originates from a US TV show and has been 'around' for years?

I posted the same complaint on WHO a few months ago. At that stage not many thought it was an issue. Now they are seeing the light.
My wife has got fed up with me shouting at the radio when an interviewee, otherwise obviously articulate, begins practically every answer with "So...."
While on the subject, historians who describe in the present tense something which happened in the past, also get my wick. I think I'll just go and lie down for a bit.

So, you have a problem with people starting a sentence with 'so', do you?
In fact, It mean, 'aha, you're a bit of a cunt, and I am going to twist what you said and make you look dim'.
Or something like that. i suspect it comes from Germany, where they start more or less every sentence with, 'so'.
Thank fuck for Brexit.

It seems that humans have subconsciously realised that other people have trouble concentrating or picking up on things quickly. Sticking in a meaningless word at the start of the sentence gets the attention and makes sure that the listener is switched on by the time the important bit comes along.
Much the same that if you have a short name it's difficult for people to get it first go. My surname is one syllable meaning that I have a two syllable full name (more if I call myself Daniel, which I don't). Absolute pain getting people to get my name first time on the phone. Which is why I generally prefix it with "His Excellency..." when introducing myself.
